As a Board member, you'll help guide the long-term vision of an organization that is expanding supportive housing, strengthening partnerships, and building pathways to lasting housing stability.
Board members contribute strategic oversight, governance, and diverse perspectives that help Open Arms continue to grow responsibly and sustainably.
WHAT WE DO
Open Arms Resource Centre provides outreach, emergency shelter, housing supports, and affordable housing initiatives across the Annapolis Valley. Guided by a Housing First philosophy, we work with partners across government, healthcare, and the community to help people move from crisis to stability.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
Serving on the Open Arms Board of Directors is a meaningful opportunity to:

Strengthen governance, sustainability, and long-term impact

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Board members are responsible for providing governance, oversight, and strategic direction. Key responsibilities include:

Attending and actively participating in regular Board meetings (typically every second month)

Serving on at least one Board committee

Preparing for meetings and completing assigned tasks between meetings
-
Supporting strategic planning and organizational decision-making
-
Ensuring Open Arms meets its legal, ethical, and financial obligations
-
Monitoring organizational performance and financial health
-
Supporting and advising the Executive Director
-
Representing Open Arms positively in the community
-
Assisting with fundraising and donor engagement
-
Upholding Board solidarity once decisions are made
TIME COMMITTMENT
Board members can expect to contribute approximately 3–6 hours per month, including:

Board and committee meetings
-
Preparation and follow-up
-
Occasional special events or strategic initiatives
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
We welcome individuals from a wide range of backgrounds and lived experiences who share a commitment to strengthening our communities.
Experience in areas such as governance, strategic thinking, finance, law, housing, healthcare, construction, communications, fundraising, human resources, or community leadership can all bring valuable perspectives to our Board.
